Littleton Young Sailors
The aim of the Littleton Young Sailors group is to introduce youngsters to sailing and, with parents, enhance sailing skills and have fun. All juniors have opportunities to progress to club racing.
Parents and Guardians involvement and support is crucial to the success of Littleton Young Sailors in assisting, coaching and supervising activities. It’s also great fun, and a chance for parents to learn more about sailing as well. Sessions will usually be co-ordinated by a nominated volunteer parent who is an experienced sailor, however experience is not essential to be involved, and help rigging, supervising and packing up is always needed.
Sessions take place on Saturday afternoons at 1pm with a view to being on the water by 1.30pm. These sessions are run on a voluntary basis by and for parents and children of Littleton. Please sign up with the Young Sailors Coordinator, Johanna Pursey, by Thursday each week, so we can plan groups and leaders.
This year the Ducklings (beginners and under 10 yrs, sailing oppies) will also have the opportunity to progress through the International Optimist Class Association grades. IOCA Log books will be available to purchase if your children would like to earn grade stickers as they learn each skill, or you could join IOCA as a family member with the Littleton Flotilla (see IOCA - http://www.optimistsailing.org.uk).
The Junior Squad will continue progressing their sailing skills through games, activities and races using Picos, Toppers and Fevas. There will be opportunities to focus on particular skills as well as racing and having fun.
In addition we hope to run structured Improvers Training on specific Saturday mornings or afternoons for groups of up to 6 children, to help develop good sailing technique and confidence in the Junior Squad, start club racing or assist with Ducklings. These formal training courses could lead to award of RYA qualifications. We will let you know when we can run these sessions, and how to apply.
Also new for this year, with the support of a number of instructors and experienced sailors at LSC, we plan to provide opportunities for Parents to receive coaching to improve their own sailing, and better support the Junior squad.
Information about family and junior membership can be found under the Joining pages.
